Lately I’ve rediscovered the infinite joy and fulfillment of reading other than blogs, magazines and informative books on design. I went to a nearby charity shop, and stocked up on books to read. The first novel I “devoured” is by Anne-Marie Casey set in the ever-pulsing metropolis of New York. It’s about four women, who’s path is crossing each other in an attempt to figure out their life choices, while keeping their sanity in the midst of motherhood and Upper East side. It’s a clever and funny read with shades of Sex and the City.
… On the far wall hung a wooden carving of four female warriors, arms inextricably linked, breast proudly jutting towards the enemy, brandishing spears and raising their muscular legs in a war dance.
“Sometimes when I think of all the time I’ve wasted, I feel so sad I don’t know what to do with myself”, Lucy said suddenly.
Carmen did not agree or disagree, but simply said, “Maybe you are a late developer?”
She looked unconvinced.
“Lucy, I long for the certainty I had when I was twenty, it makes life so much easier if there’s only one road to travel, but now I’m older, I think there are as many shades of women as…”
Carmen paused, and so she piped up, “…drugstore hair colour to cover grey. Everything from ash-blonde warrior to raven-black homemaker.”…
… He told her it was good (
the poem) and he was proud of her and she should really give writing a go and, if she did, she’d have to give it a year or two to see.
She lay on top of him, her head pressed into his neck, and whispered, “Thank you” and said she would and what she wanted to thank him for was not only his generosity and support, financial and emotional, but also the gift of taking her seriously, despite all the years and all the reasons not to.
All she had to do now was take herself seriously…
